A Reassuring Visit

I set about to reading

Aligned down the path

The bushes winter pleaching

And to solve their ordered math

I fell into a hole then

Where the gravel fell away

Not where they should have been

The eyes had lost the day

The hole was dark and kept going

The end abrupt but lit

A cave where dust was snowing

Down on me in the pit

A devil lurched in and stood

Offering me a hand

It was cold and so like wood

Pulling me from the sand

He took me further in grinning

Knowing the shocking sights

Of those engaged in sinning

Poked by devils wearing tights

He bade me take a seat

In a burning fiery chair

And offered me burning meat

Still covered in human hair

Later when I returned

Having crawled up a flue

My hands and feet were burned

And I pressed them in the dew

I was free of sin he said

And had let me go

Standing with his dead

Saying he’d miss me so

Because my skin was cool

Was of the silent moon

Clearly I was a fool

But one he’d not see soon
